EYE CARE TIPS

As a veterinary specialist, I am often asked advice regarding grooming protocol for our patients especially post-surgically. Therefore, listed below are some suggestions for you to follow at home and to share with your groomer.

  1. Prior to bathing, a lubricating, non-medicated ointment should be applied topically to both eyes.

  2. Every attempt should be made to keep a blow dryer away from the pet’s face and eyes.

  3. When your groomer is discussing the type of clip you want for your pet, it is especially important to keep the hair around the eyes and bridge of the nose short, and away from the eyes.

  4. If your pet is presently being maintained on a topical and/or oral medical regime, this should be followed on the day of the grooming episode.

The skin around your pet’s eyes is a very sensitive area, if it becomes necessary to remove dust or debris fro this area please follow these suggestions:

  1. Begin with your pet in the sitting position before you with your hand resting on the top of his head.

  2. With your free hand, use a gauze moistened in warm water to gently clean the areas around the eyes.

  3. Use this time to examine your pet’s eyes which should be clear, shiny, and free of discharge or inflammation.

  4. Praise and reward your pet!

If you notice any discharge, redness or cloudiness in the eyes please contact your veterinarian for an examination. If you or your groomer have any questions, please do not hesitate to call my office.
